The secret ingredients for healthy rodents...

foodmix.jpg

I make up my own rodent mix to approximately the following ratios

Base mix of:
2 parts large wild bird seed
1 part smaller seed such as canary or budgie seed
1 part rabbit and GP mix
1 part rabbit and GP pellets
1 part cat or dog dry food (home brand is fine)

To this I then add crushed biscuits such as ryvitas, rolled oats and occasionally nuts as a treat. They also take great delight in the last few bits out of the ceareal boxes before we throw them away.

Except for the situation mentioned below, as a general rule - if you wouldn't eat it yourself, don't feed it to your pets.

At my house we have a bit of a problem with grain moths, they tend to chew holes through otherwise perfect grain based foods.  While humans may hesitate to eat it, my rats think it is a great treat, to hunt all of the moth grubs out of whatever it is we have given them.
